Andrew Radcliffe was born in Connecticut. He received a BFA from Pratt Institute in 1984, attended Skowhegan in 1984 and received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1987. He presently works in a studio in Union Square, Manhattan. His work is comprised of oil paintings, watercolors and ink drawings. For over 30 years, his works continue to explore the drama, perils and elations that life may bring, using the human figure in unusual, sometimes disjointed poses to reflect this condition and trigger emotion. The figures act as allegories, caught in the chaos of existence—tumbling, spinning, swimming, climbing, descending, ascending. A broad variety of painting techniques engulf the figure, fragment or alter its appearance as well as frame the environment it exists in. Through this visual language, he explores an ongoing portrait of the human condition to remind us of our shared fragility, as well as our shared resilience.
