Andrew Radcliffe was born in Connecticut, received a BFA from Pratt Institute, studied Art History at the University of Florence, attended Skowhegan and received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He presently lives and works in NYC. He works in painting, watercolor and ink drawing. His works explore the drama, perils and elations that life may bring, using the human figure in unusual, sometimes disjointed poses to reflect this condition. The figures act as allegories, caught in the chaos of existence—climbing, tumbling, swimming, walking, spinning, ascending, descending. A broad variety of painting techniques engulf the figure, fragment or alter its appearance as well as frame the environment it exists in. Through this visual language, he examines an ongoing portrait of the human condition, our shared fragility, as well as our shared resilience.
